The opening scene is shot and staged like grand opera, with outsized performances from all concerned. Yet, when we look at the final moments of the movie, it ends in an equally violent fashion, but it's done in such a markedly different way. The opening moments of 'The Godfather, Part II' see the child Vito Andolini arrive in America after the merciless death of his own mother at the hands of a local mafioso.
#When was the godfather 2 made movie
Throughout 'The Godfather' and 'The Godfather, Part II', the movie charts and explores the rise of American dynasty and mythmaking. With Francis Ford Coppola announcing a new cut of 'The Godfather, Part III' earlier this week, we're looking at the closing moments of 'The Godfather, Part II'. That being said, if I ever see George Lucas on the street I will scream “Now that’s pod racing” as I hit him in the face (gently) with a whipped cream pie.The Final Scene looks at the last few minutes of some of the most well-known movies of the past fifty years. I guess “worst sequel” is an entirely personal and subjective thing. The you had that CGI car crash with so many misfires and silliness. The original Star Wars trilogy was a global phenomenon going so far as to spawn its own religion.

No, for my money the worst sequel ever was The Phantom Menace (and yes, technically a prequel). It was very popular at the time but not exactly a global blockbuster. I loved the original Blues Brothers as I grew up in Chicago and actually shopped at the mall where it was filmed when I was a kid (I’m old). It would have to be a huge hit, an absolute smash, and then have a total turkey as a sequel. To be the worse sequel ever you probably have to have a universal love for the original. It is at that moment that Michael knows he will forever be guilted and torn up for Fredo.

There's a certain look in his eye which knows he messed up.it says a lot about him. And it covers them perfectlyĪlso, the final shot of this film is haunting - with Michael alone on the bench. It just has so much to say about life - family, the American dream, evil, etc. The first film is a great film, but I think this one is the true masterpiece. Yet in this film, this is what Michael does.and the phislohpical implications of such power are fascinating to see unravel on screen. Never in the real life history of the mafia, has a single man taken control for himself. This is seen by how Michael "monopolizes" the mafia. In many ways, his rise to power is a representation of corporatist America - the transition from small/medium sized family businesses to monolithic and cold corporate entities. While he does expect favours in return, he is loved by his community - they're grateful for him.Ĭomparatively, Michael is motivated by envy, fear and hatred. We see this when he ascends to power and starts giving generous favours. He is a man of his word who really finds meaning and joy through helping others. Vito is an opportunist, but he is primarily motivated by love and friendship. The use of flashbacks is used to juxtapose Vito's early 20th century immigrant experience versus Michael's mid 20th century capitalist endeavor. Still, these are two masterful performances in a powerhouse of a film. While De Niro gives an excellent performance as Don Vito Corleone, I do actually think Pacino's is superior. It's a crime that he didn't win Best Actor for this. He is capable of remorse, empathy and love, all of which makes his descent more compelling. What I think makes this more tragic is that Michael is NOT actually a sociopath or psychopath. Just the subtlety and nuances in his face and mannerisms.in some scenes he's downright terrifying.

Pacino has a few shouty lines in this film, but most of his terrifying moments come from his quietness. While the first film deals with Michael's ascent to power, GF2 shows us Michael's descent into pure evil with the loss of his soul. However after viewing it again, not only do I think it is comfortably the greatest sequel ever made, but it is also superior to the original film.
